„Super 80 Send Off“: #AmericanAirlines retired 20 #MD80´s in one day

American Airlines retired 20 of their remaining MD-80s on August 23rd, 2016, reducing the official size of their MD-80-fleet to 61 aircraft. The company gradually retired a large number of MD-80, but the retirement of 20 aircraft within one day is seen as a remarkable move.

The fleet will be reduced to 53 aircraft at the end of the third quarter of 2016 and it is believed that a small number will remain until the summer of 2018.

Allegiant Air orders twelve new A320s

Allegiant Air has placed an order for twelve new Airbus A320s. This marks the first order for new aircraft in the history of this company. Deliveries of these A320s will take place between 2017 and 2018.

Allegiant plans to replace their MD-80-fleet by 2019 with a mix of Airbus A319/320s. The small Boeing 757-fleet will also be retired.

Andes plans to replace their MD-80s with Airbus A319s

Argentine company Andes Líneas Aéreas plans to replace their MD-80-fleet with Airbus A319s. The current fleet will be replaced by four A319s. Andes celebrated their 10th-anniversary a few days ago. Most sources claim that Andes currently operates four MD-80s and the introduction of the A319 would mean a 1:1-replacement of the MD-80-fleet.

Potential new #MD80-operator: ALK Airlines

Bulgarian company „ALK Airlines“ aims to start their services from Varna with at least two Fokker 100s and a single MD-80. I don´t have additional information about the current status nor detailed information regarding this airline.

Zagros Airlines #MD83 runway excursion at Mashhad, Iran

There are reports that an MD-83 operated by Iranian company Zagros Airlines suffered a runway excursion at Mashhad airport/Iran. It is believed that all passengers were able to escape the damaged aircraft. No further information are available at the moment.

Es existieren Berichte, das eine MD-83 der iranischen Fluggesellschaft Zagros Airlines in Mashhad/Iran über die Piste gerutscht ist. Anscheinend konnten alle Passagiere das beschädigte Flugzeug verlassen. Weitere Informationen liegen mir im Moment nicht vor.

Iranian #TaftanAir due to take first #MD83

Iranian company Taftan Air is due to take delivery of at least one McDonnell Douglas MD-83. I don´t have additional information about this Fokker 50-operator and my plan is to use the upcoming weekend for more research and to upload a page for Taftan Air on MD-80.com.

Das iranische Unternehmen Taftan Air steht vor der Einführung von mindestens einer McDonnell Douglas MD-83. Weitere Informationen über dieses mit Fokker 60 operierende Unternehmen liegen mir zurzeit nicht vor, möchte aber zum kommenden Wochenende ausreichend recherchiert haben, um eine Seite für Taftan Air auf MD-80.com einzurichten.

Bulgarian Air Charter due to take first Airbus A320

Bulgarian Air Charter is due to receive their first Airbus A320 and this decision could be seen as the first step to replace their currently operated MD-80-fleet. The mentioned A320 is an ex-Cyprus Airways-frame and wears the registration LZ-LAA.

Bulgarian Air Charter steht vor der Übernahme ihrer ersten Airbus A320 und diese Entscheidung könnte als erster Schritt des Ersatzes der derzeit eingesetzten MD-80 angesehen werden. Bei der erwähnten A320 handelt es sich um eine ex-Cyprus Airways-Maschine, die schon die Registrierung LZ-LAA trägt.

Croatian „#SeaAir“ aims to start #MD80-ops

Croatian company „Sea Air“ aims to start MD-80-ops with a 160-seat MD-82 leased from Ten Airways. Sea Air aims to fly from Osijek to Frankfurt, Munich, and Vienna.

#AmericanAirlines aims to retire remaining #MD80´s by 2018

According to official information, American Airlines aims to retire their last MD-80s by 2018. The following downsizing of the fleet calls for the following size at the end of each remaining year:

At the end of 2014, American Airlines operated 139 MD-80s and this number will decrease to 96 at the end of 2015. 60 MD-80s will be operational at the end of 2016 and 34 aircraft at the end of 2017. It is likely that the remaining 34 MD-80s will be retired during 2018.

Offiziellen Informationen nach, plant American Airlines die Ausmusterung ihrer verbliebenen MD-80-Flotte bis 2018. Die folgenden Angaben geben die geplante Reduzierung zum Ende der verbleibenden Einsatzjahre an: Ende 2014 setzte American Airlines 139 MD-80 ein und diese Anzahl wird Ende 2015 auf 96 Einheiten sinken. 60 MD-80 werden Ende 2016 noch aufgelistet und 34 Flugzeuge Ende 2017. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass im Laufe des Jahres 2018 die letzte MD-80 ausgemustert wird.

Last #MD80 Of #SAS Leaves European Soil

As mentioned in the MD-80-Forum, on facebook and Twitter before, the last MD-82 of SAS (SE-DIR) left European soil for her last journey to the USA. This ends an important chapter in Scandinavian aviation due to the long association of the DC-9/MD-80/-90 with SAS Scandinavian Airlines.
