New MD-80-operator from Ukraine: Anda Air

One new MD-80-operator quietly started services in the Ukraine: Anda Air. The airline started their ops in mid-October 2016 with at least one 167-seat McDonnell Douglas MD-83.

„Super 80 Send Off“: #AmericanAirlines retired 20 #MD80´s in one day

American Airlines retired 20 of their remaining MD-80s on August 23rd, 2016, reducing the official size of their MD-80-fleet to 61 aircraft. The company gradually retired a large number of MD-80, but the retirement of 20 aircraft within one day is seen as a remarkable move.

The fleet will be reduced to 53 aircraft at the end of the third quarter of 2016 and it is believed that a small number will remain until the summer of 2018.

#DAT puts remaining #MD83 up for sale

According to ch-aviation.com, DAT (Danish Air Transport) plans to cease MD-80-ops and the remaining MD-83 is now offered for sale. The 165-seat aircraft – originally delivered to Airtours International in 1990 – was used alongside an MD-87 as their biggest aircraft prior to the introduction of the 180-seat Airbus A320. DAT also operates ATR42/72s as well as mentioned Airbus A320s.

Allegiant Air orders twelve new A320s

Allegiant Air has placed an order for twelve new Airbus A320s. This marks the first order for new aircraft in the history of this company. Deliveries of these A320s will take place between 2017 and 2018.

Allegiant plans to replace their MD-80-fleet by 2019 with a mix of Airbus A319/320s. The small Boeing 757-fleet will also be retired.

Aeronaves T.S.M takes additional MD-80SF

Aeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) announced the 4th order for an MD-82SF freighter conversion from Aeronaves T.S.M. (TSM). The aircraft will be used for services on behalf of DHL.

Andes plans to replace their MD-80s with Airbus A319s

Argentine company Andes Líneas Aéreas plans to replace their MD-80-fleet with Airbus A319s. The current fleet will be replaced by four A319s. Andes celebrated their 10th-anniversary a few days ago. Most sources claim that Andes currently operates four MD-80s and the introduction of the A319 would mean a 1:1-replacement of the MD-80-fleet.

Potential new #MD80-operator: ALK Airlines

Bulgarian company „ALK Airlines“ aims to start their services from Varna with at least two Fokker 100s and a single MD-80. I don´t have additional information about the current status nor detailed information regarding this airline.

Up to 125 CSeries-jetliners for Delta as MD-88-replacement

Several sources claim that Delta is finalizing a huge order for up to 125 Bombardier CSeries-aircraft. It is very likely that the new aeroplanes will replace the MD-88-fleet. Delta continues to operate 115 venerable 149-seat MD-88s.

#Delta reportedly close to announce an order for narrowbodies

Delta Air Lines is reportedly looking to place an order „for dozens“ of new narrowbody aircraft. Potential candidates are Boeing 737s in addition for their currently operated 737s or the Bombardier C-Series. It appears that this new order will enable Delta to start the retirement of their MD-88-fleet.

Zagros Airlines #MD83 runway excursion at Mashhad, Iran

There are reports that an MD-83 operated by Iranian company Zagros Airlines suffered a runway excursion at Mashhad airport/Iran. It is believed that all passengers were able to escape the damaged aircraft. No further information are available at the moment.
