Last #MD80 Of #SAS Leaves European Soil

As mentioned in the MD-80-Forum, on facebook and Twitter before, the last MD-82 of SAS (SE-DIR) left European soil for her last journey to the USA. This ends an important chapter in Scandinavian aviation due to the long association of the DC-9/MD-80/-90 with SAS Scandinavian Airlines.

#Swiftair stops passenger-flights for winter 2014/15, no future for #MD80s

Spanish company Swiftair apparently stopped passenger-services on behalf of other airlines for the winter-season of 2014/15 and retired their remaining MD-80-fleet of three aircraft. The airline wants to restart this business in the summer of 2015, albeit with alternative aircraft and no MD-80s.

On July 24, 2014 one MD-83 operated by Swiftair performed scheduled flight AH5017 from Ouagadougou to Algiers for Air Algérie. The aircraft disappeared off radar 50 minutes after takeoff. All 116 people perished in the crash. The reasons are yet to be determined.

The discontinuation of MD-80-ops could mean the end of an important chapter of Spanish aviation-history because the MD-80 played a vital role among Spanish airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines checks ten #B717s after reports of corrosion

Inspectors of the FAA discovered corrosion on two Boeing 717-aircraft of Hawaiian Air. As a precautionary measure, Hawaiian Air decided to check eight additional 717 for potential corrosion on panels under the wings.  It´s important to know that the FAA asked Hawaiian Air to take a closer look at the problems of two aircraft and the voluntary measure by Hawaiian Airlines to check eight other aircraft.

Approx. 40 flights were delayed or cancelled as a result of the inspections. Some B717-flights were substituted with far bigger Boeing 767s to cope with a higher demand of passengers due to the inspection showed that the other aircraft were not affected by corrosion-problems.

Hawaiian Airlines´s inter-island services are mainly operated by 18 Boeing 717s.
